Four Indoor Plants That Will Keep Your Home Cool

Summer is just around the corner, and it’s starting to feel quite humid these days. For those who pay their own electricity bills, you probably have a love-hate relationship with summer. You enjoy the bright, summer sun, and all the activities you have in store. But you’re also worried about the surge of your electricity bill due to the increased use of your central air-conditioning system. It’s all fun and games until you see the cost of your electric consumption (yikes!).

But that doesn’t have to be the case. You can enjoy your summer without worrying about adding to your utility expenses by finding more cost-efficient ways to stay cool. One very eco-friendly and effective method is by growing indoor plants.

The hobby of housing indoor plants has recently grown in popularity. That’s because they really brighten up the room and also help purify the air. But plants can also come in handy when trying to ward off the summer heat. When the atmosphere becomes too humid, they release excess water to cool themselves and their surroundings. If you’re interested in bringing plants into your home, here are some good low maintenance indoor plants you can start with.

Snake Plant

The snake plant, aka mother-in-law’s tongue, is a common choice of indoor plant. That’s because they’re incredibly low maintenance and can thrive well even in low light conditions. They don’t need constant watering, too. All they require is one thorough watering every two weeks or so, or until two to three inches of the topsoil has dried out.

We know that plants produce oxygen in the morning and then release carbon dioxide at night. But the snake plant continues to release oxygen and purify the air during the night, making it an ideal plant to put in the bedroom. Aside from keeping the air cool, the Snake Plant also removes toxic pollutants such as benzene and formaldehyde.

Peace Lily

The peace lily is one of the most beautiful plants to have in your home. They have dark green and luscious leaves that can instantly add color to a dull area. When properly taken care of, the white lilies will beautifully bloom. But aside from their aesthetic appeal, there’s a more important reason the Peace Lily should be among your indoor plants.

The bigger and wider the leaves of a plant are, the more oxygen and moisture it releases. With the build of the peace lily, it can easily make even a large room cooler during hot temperatures. NASA has also named this plant as one of the best in getting rid of air toxins.

Rubber Plant

Rubber plants are ideal for indoor care because they are not high maintenance at all. They only require small sips of water and evenly damp soil every so often. But they can utilize this small amount of water well. Their roots absorb it and release moisture back into the air through pores located under their leaves. Hence, effectively replenishing moisture in the air and improving humidity conditions.

Palm

There are many different types of palm plants, such as the areca palm and bamboo palm. But all species of the palm plant are very good at keeping their atmosphere cool. They usually grow up to six feet tall and develop voluminous leaves. This structure provides adequate shade to a room, giving a tropical rainforest feel. As long as you mist the plants weekly, they can improve humidity in the air and produce more oxygen.

It turns out that you don’t have to worry about your electricity bill this summer season. Invest in house plants that can help keep your home cool despite the humid weather.
